Stephen Garrett, PhD has an eclectic background, having served in the military after West Point, in business as an engineer with UPS, in non-profit leadership with Global Scholars, and in higher education for 20+ years. He is a Senior Fellow with the Rivendell Institute at Yale and was formerly an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. He also served as a Visiting Professor at the European Humanities University in Vilnius, Lithuania and participated in higher education development work throughout Eastern Europe as part of the European Union Partnership Program. His current research project examines theories of the avant-garde through the lens of dialogical personalism and African philosophies like Ubuntu. In doing so, he seeks to transfigure avant-garde discourse from nihilist negation into a more fruitful lens of encounter that values and needs the other for creative understanding.
