James Uden is a Professor of Classics. Born in Sydney, Australia, he joined Yale in 2025 after 14 years at Boston University. His research is in Latin literature, and he has a secondary interest in Romanticism and the Gothic. He is the author of two books: one on the satirist Juvenal (The Invisible Satirist, Oxford, 2015), and one on the Gothic novel (Spectres of Antiquity, 2020). He also has a passion for Roman cultural history, and has taught classes on ancient warfare, ancient medicine, Greek myth, and everyday life in Ancient Rome. He can be reached at james.uden@yale.edu.
